Princess Tutu drabble
Out of the blue. I'm trying to come up with something for Yuletide NYR purposes, is the thing, but there's a 1000-word minimum on that, and this isn't getting any longer.

Fakir/Ahiru, post-post-series.

* * *

Epilogue

*

After the reading there was a question and answer session in the back of the bookshop. Inevitably someone would ask where he got his ideas, what inspired him, did he have a muse.

"My wife," he said, "is retired now, but for most of her life she was a dance instructor. Prior to that she was a duck."

Laughter from the audience. They always mistook him for a comedian when he told this story.

"When I first started writing 'seriously' I wrote a lot of epic sagas about ducks turning into princesses, or prima ballerinas, and when those didn't work out I tried writing about ducks turning into ordinary women. None of those were any good. It's easier to write what you want to be true rather than what is true, I think.

"One night I had a breakthrough. I scribbled off this monstrosity about a boy who loved a duck. It went on about how clumsy he was, how useless and frustrated, and how patient the duck was, putting up with a writer--writers are the most insufferable people to live with. We were living together at the time, unmarried. Of course all the young people do it now, but in that day and age we only got away with it because she was a duck. In any case. I wrote this thing, which had no happy ending, I think it ended with ellipses, which your grammar teacher will tell you not to do, and then I got piss-drunk on cheap porter--the cheapest, since we had no money, we were living on breadcrumbs, literally--and I passed out. When I woke up the next day it was almost noon, and there was this," he paused, caught in admiration of the memory, "this incredible naked girl sitting next to me, and white feathers all over the bed." His audience laughed again. Their faces wavered at him like lamps against the backdrop of slipshod bookcases.

"As you can imagine I fell directly off the bed and hit my head on the bedside table. She had to put on old clothes of mine and drag me to the hospital. On the way there I kept thinking over and over, I should've had a dress for her--why didn't I have a dress ready for her to put on? But I would've guessed the size wrong. Anyway the concussion turned out to be mild." He reached for the glass of water on the tabletop, where the anniversary edition of his first novel lay shut. He took a drink, frowning as he swallowed. "I'm sorry, what was the question?"

He stayed another half hour, signing books and talking, before he put on his hat and coat and took up his black umbrella. It had rained in the early evening but the sky had settled since. Between the cobblestones outside the bookshop little threads of silver water unspooled to run down the length of the street. For a moment he stood on the curb, studying their tracery. Instead of hailing a cab he set off at a walk to follow them, unhurried, while his umbrella swung from his hand very like a cane, nothing like a sword.

I adore your writing to bits and pieces. Seriously.
Fakir is a surprisingly good public speaker!

See, he and Ahiru moved to England and grew old together and Fakir turned into Neil Gaiman.

WTF Fakir Gaiman was here last week. I should've gone to one of his book signing sessions. Maybe in addition to an autograph I could've coaxed a couple of jetes from him.

But you said you didn't get the Gaiman appeal?

As I don't know much about Tutu except, uh, one episode of the anime, I can only say that I really enjoyed reading this but I don't know why.

I get that there IS an appeal, I mean, one can perceive this through observation, 9 million fangirls etc., and I like his writing, and I think he's funny and clever, it's just that I'm not inspired to attend morning services at the Church of Neil.

Tutu is worth watching more if you get the chance. Wait, aren't you in France yet?

Am now in Paris, smoking entirely too much but otherwise enjoying myself. Looking for postcards to send.

I am not a real member of Church of Gneil, but I like that he is so welcoming to his fans. A good number of the aforementioned groupies fangirls know him personally and have been known to rescue him from deadly street traffic, etc.

This is easily the best Tutu fic I've ever read. I've always been a big fan of your writing (I loved your last tutu fic!), and as usual, this story was wonderfully written! When I finished watching Princess Tutu, I felt so bitersweet about the ending... it was a brilliant way to end things, but I couldn't help thinking how I would have liked seeing Fakir write Ahiru out of feathers. You did such a great job with this fic; this is EXACTLY what I'll now imagine as the show's epilogue whenever I watch that last episode.

I feel the same way about the ending, I'm glad the series ended as it did, although it begs to have little postscripts tacked on. Thank you!

Have my UNDYING LOVE. Actually, you've always had it, but have it some more. <3

I wrote this thing, which had no happy ending, I think it ended with ellipses, which your grammar teacher will tell you not to do, and then I got piss-drunk on cheap porter--the cheapest, since we had no money, we were living on breadcrumbs, literally--and I passed out.

*snorts*

Why white feathers? Ahiru is a yellow duckie.

I'm trying to come up with something for Yuletide

Because you wanna participate in this year's Yuletide?

<333 She's only yellow as a chick. I mean, as a duckling. As an adult duck she will be white. I, I don't know why I'm convinced of this.

I do wanna participate in this year's Yuletide, it looks fun and I was sad that I missed last year's.

So long as she doesn't end up with that weird red-flesh thing I've seen on most ducks, her changing feather colors goes fine by me. Though I'm convinced she'll always be that yellow-feathered, blue-eyed baby duckie. *sniffles*

Awww. I just finished watching the series about an hour ago, and, yeah. This is what I needed. Pretty much perfect, the ending, as long as this happened, somewhere along the line...

also, "living on breadcrumbs, literally." Haww!

Just rewatched PT, and loved it all over again. No wonder its in my top 3 anime chocies.

I had saved this in my memories, but couldn't remember what it was, so I went to read it again. It's lovely. The last line is particularly good.
Have you written any other PT fic?
